L'oase Resort and Spa is owned by Joseph and Vasthi Kruchten and is a great place to hang out. There is a bar on the premises called Sam's Bar which was once in downtown Puerto Plata city but has now been moved to L'oase and Sam's is just as fun to go to now as it was before. A lot of expatriates from the U.S., Canada and various parts of Europe frequent the place. The owners are fantastic people and always make visitors feel welcome. This place is definitely worth visiting while on the D.R.'s north coast.

This blog will be about travel in the Dominican Republic, where to go and what to do. Since April 2008 I have gone to the D.R. every three months. I know the country like the back of my hand and having travelled all of Latin America, I believe it's the best country, which says a lot, because ALL of Latin America is great.

Visiting A Small Mountain Village Above Puerto Plata City.
I had the pleasure of visiting a little village in the mountains of Puerto Plata called El Cupey. It was really nice and peaceful with friendly people.

Bus Travel In The Dominican Republic.
Buses, taxis, "carros públicos" and guaguas (mini-buses) are the most popular modes of transportation in the D.R., with some being more comfortable than others. Taxis are the most expensive, but they're more comfortable than a Carro Público or guagua because you're and/or your friends are the only ones in it. I prefer the carros públicos because they're very cheap, but you have to tolerate being packed in tight with a lot of other people like sardines. From Sosua to Puerto Plata city in a carro público, the price is only 40 pesos RD.
If you're travelling long distance within the D.R. the best way to go is either Metrobus or Caribetours. I have used both and like them both equally. In the three videos below I am in a Metrobus going from Puerto Plata to Santo Domingo.

Cabarete in Puerto Plata Province
Although I have been travelling to the D.R. every three months for the last four years, I had never explored the city of Cabarete. I had driven through it's center countless times on my way to other places, but not until today did I stop to actually walk around and take a look. I went to the beach and ate at a restaurant called Lax, where I had a decent pizza for 350 dominican pesos. There are a lot of american and european tourists in Cabarete, something that I'm not crazy about (I prefer to hang with the locals for the most part), but for those who like such an atmosphere, Cabarete is a good place.
